Nintendo Fitness Game Great for Seniors
Nintendo’s U.S. debut of the Wii Fit system proves to be a great
exercise option for seniors. The Wii Fit system offers 40 “games” in the
categories of yoga, aerobics, balance and strength training, a very well
balanced menu of cross-training activities. Dr. Bryant Stamford,
director of the University of Kentucky’s Health Promotion and Wellness
Center believes a cross-training exercise program is perfect for
seniors because - done in moderation - it can help minimize injuries
and enhance well-being by creating a more well-rounded exercise
regime.
Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, author of 5-factor Fitness attended
Nintendo’s launch event. Seeing the Wii Fit in use, he is convinced it is
a tremendous tool to prolong an active lifestyle for people of all ages,
including seniors. “I got beaten by both a 9-year-old and a 72-year-old
at hula hoping.” He does caution that individuals should always check
with a doctor before beginning any new exercise program.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) conducted a study of the Wii
Fit system and concluded that all participants showed “a marked
increase in exercise intensity and burned a similar number of calories
as they would if they were participating in other forms of aerobic
activity.”
The Wii Fit and balance board retails at $89.99 and is available at many
retail outlets and online retailers across the country.
